MARIA RAZUMOVSKAYA

Pianist, Maria Razumovskaya has been praised for her ‘staggeringly passionate playing’ (Gramophone) and described as a ‘virtuoso story-teller of the piano’ (Le Courrier). Although based in the United Kingdom, her solo performances have taken her across the world including major international festivals in Europe and the Far East. Her live performances have been recorded and broadcast on RTS, Espace 2, Radio Orefo, and BBC Radio 3 where she was selected as part of their highly coveted ‘BBC Introducing’ scheme and featured as highlights in Radio 3’s ‘Performing Miracles’ series.

Razumovskaya is also a keen collaborative pianist and sees it as an exciting opportunity to reinvigorate international cultural dialogue to inspire bilateral understanding amongst audiences and institutions. Her performance and outreach projects, highlighting the artistic ties of various countries, have been supported by the British Council and the AHRC. Recent international recitals include chamber music projects with soloists from the Mariinsky Opera, Bolshoi Opera, Metropolitan Opera, National Opera Orchestra of Paris, Basel Philharmonic, Berlin Philharmonic and Luxembourg Philharmonia orchestras.

Razumovskaya’s debut disc, Liszt B Minor Piano Sonata and Other Works (Malachite), recorded by Tony Faulkner, was received with critical acclaim and was shortlisted for the Liszt Disque Grand Prix; with her subsequent recording of works of Busoni, Liszt, CPE Bach and Rachmaninov being singled out by Pizzicato magazine.

She is passionate about encouraging audiences to share in her curiosity for the stories behind the music and its makers. Razumovskaya’s writings include an award winning monograph (Outstanding Academic Title, USA) on the legendary pianist and pedagogue Heinrich Neuhaus (Boydell & Brewer). It is the first critical English-language study of the great artist. She also has book chapters in publications by Indiana University Press and Palgrave Macmillan, and articles for academic journals and the wider press including BBC Music, International Piano, and Pianist magazines.

Maria Razumovskaya received her pianistic training in the class of Rustem Hayroudinoff at the Royal Academy of Music in London, graduating with Distinction and several prizes. She furthered her studies with Professor Dmitri Alexeev as an Arts and Humanities Research Council doctoral scholar at the Royal College of Music.

She is a professor at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama, a lecturer at the City Literary Institute, and guest faculty at several international music academies and festivals.
